One of the biggest challenges I have is to get people to think incrementally and iteratively when developing software. When you have spent an entire career focusing on end-goal fixed product definitions, its hard to understand it’s all about a vision, the journey and the decisions you make on the way.

Following on from Stan's post on relative estimation I feel the need to comment on why we don't estimate in days or hours, and why relative estimation is better and lower maintenance for planning and tracking projects.

There are three key reasons we don't use absolute estimates:

  • Developers don't like committing to man day estimates
  • Contingency gets added in at many different stages bloating the estimates
  • Project managers assume the estimates are fixed

I set out this morning with a specific plan, a specific goal. The 516 from Bishops Stortford, the 645 from Paddington, at work in Cardiff for 9.

Well, for those who commute regularly, it's been one of those days! So far nothing has gone to plan. I find myself in a different place at a different time.

Last week I wrote a small blog post again pointing out the need for governance of Agile projects. In response Joseph Motha commented that my post would be more interesting if I explained how governance could be achieved. So here goes...

Around this time of year, some of the members of our team always seem to find themselves involved in that most seasonally-topical (ahem) of activities - planning what they’ll be doing on Christmas Day. One of us, in particular, has decided that this kind of thing is about as Agile as anything can get in everyday life, as it’s all about adapting to changing circumstances.

Scrum Of Scrums

So people used to go on about how agile doesn’t scale. Well our work at the Guardian certainly proves that agile scales just fine and then some thanks very much!

Scrum introduced the concept of “Scrum of Scrums” as a way to keep teams working together on an overall project in sync.
