Is an iPhone app the answer?

We are seeing an increasing demand (or more accurately desire) within membership organisations and charities for the development of iPhone apps.

Although apps offer organisations a potential marketing coup, this is probably not the best way to meet member and stakeholder needs.

IndigoBlue introduced a management and governance to the programme that allowed us to remain responsive to the business whist providing suitable control and executive-level visibility.”

Based on the fundamental roadmap for Lean software development, as developed by Mary and Tom Poppendieck:

Train Team Leaders / Supervisors - give your team leaders and supervisors the guidance and training they need, along with the freedom, to be able to implement Lean practices in their working environment.

Move Responsibility and Decision Making to the Lowest Possible Level - allow your team members to think and decide on things for themselves, as they will know best how to implement state of the art developments and algorithms.

Based on the fundamental roadmap for Lean software development, as developed by Mary and Tom Poppendieck:

Work in Small Batches at a Steady Cadence - reduce the size and scale of the overall project, with shorter release cycles, concentrating on what works well and jettisoning what doesn’t.

Limit Work to Capacity - limit the amount of work that is queued up to that which you can realistically perform within one or two iterations, and don’t be scared of leaving work off the queue until such time as you have the capacity to do it.

Based on the fundamental roadmap for Lean software development, as developed by Mary and Tom Poppendieck:

Abolish the Notion that it is Good Practice to Start Development with a Complete Specification - unlike traditional methods of development, Lean will allow you to update and revise the spec as you go along, based on changing circumstances.

Break Dependencies - the individual components of the development should be linked together loosely, to allow for development and implementation in any order.

Based on the fundamental roadmap for Lean software development, as developed by Mary and Tom Poppendieck:

Create Design-Build Teams - the development team must have an input into the ongoing project, with the team leader asking relevant questions and feeding back effectively, so problems and solutions can be identified as quickly as possible.

Based on the fundamental roadmap for Lean software development, as developed by Mary and Tom Poppendieck:

Synchonize - ensure that all your code is synchronized with the rest of the code you’re developing, through focusing on quality throughout.

Automate - develop automated systems and procedures for everything that is routine, such as testing, building and installations, ensuring the automation is adaptable and updateable throughout the project, so it can be improved without having to go back and alter the original code.
